But as we always say as the popularity of any platform increases the scammers on the platform also increase. Today we are going to know more about the Ola Scam and how some people are scammed by their assigned drivers!
When people book their cabs on Ola the driver makes some stupid reasons and says that he can not find you. So he asks you to provide him a OTP which you will receive so that he can use a different device and find you. Only two simple steps and you are scammed! Yes, you got scammed. Read to find out how exactly that happened.
Let us have a look at how the Ola Scam works
Booking a cab
Let us consider a scenario where you are leaving for somewhere and you book a cab on Ola. Ola is a trustworthy platform and also provides the quality they promised. There are some Drivers on Ola that have nothing to do with the brands reputation and scam people shamelessly. Let us consider the worst case scenario that you book a cab and you get such a scammer assigned as your driver! The ride to the scam begins…
Driver arrives but not at your doorstep
The driver will come closer to the location which you provided to him. But he will not arrive at the exact location but rather stop somewhere far like 5-7 mins away from you. Now you are waiting for your cab and you are seeing this from past 10 mins already:
You want to reach your destination on time, so you call the driver to ask what’s the problem? The driver then tells you that there is something wrong in the navigation and he can not find your location. So you being in a hurry ask him to stay there and you will walk to his location (irony is real), instead he pitches the first phase of the scam. He tells you that this keeps happening every now and then, no need to worry. He will need to enter your details in another app authorized only for drivers designed by Ola.
Second phase of the Ola scam
You are in a hurry so you tell him to do whatever he wants to do. Taking advantage of the situation he asks you to share the OTP you will receive on your phone. So that he can reach you immediately!
You dont think it over as you have to give the OTP to the driver anyways when you start the ride. You have successfully provided him all the details he needed to scam you!
What happens when you share the OTP
Now you must be wondering what is so special about sharing the OTP? The thing is that he did not ask you the OTP to find your location. He needed the OTP to Login into your Ola account! Yes, he now has access to your Ola Account.
Now two things happen when this person logs into your account:
- He will mark the ride as completed and will automatically get the money for that ride.
- He can transfer your Ola Money
If you use Ola more frequently you will most probably have some balance in your Ola Money wallet. This Scammer will not stop by completing the ride itself, but he will also transfer your Ola Money balance to himself or someone else.
You will be waiting for your ride and the Scammer has already completed the ride and also took your money.
How to be safe from this scam and what to do if you were scammed?
The most important thing you must always be sure that you must not share your OTP with anyone, no matter what the reason is the message in which you receive the OTP says do not share this OTP with anyone.
If somehow you are scammed contact Ola Immediately and tell them about the situation. They will definitely help you out. When you face such an incident report this to Ola so that they will ban the rider and the same thing will not happen to someone else.
