We saw some posts on Facebook some days back that people are making an order online of some goods, they pay in advance and they never receive what they have ordered.
We first thought maybe there is some issue with the business owner and the complainant, but later many people started posting. I can’t find the group in which it was posted, but we were positive that this is a new type of scam.
So, we decided to investigate what the matter is and we found some interesting things.
As many people are now opting for online transactions the number of people misusing online platforms and scamming people are increasing. They are like cockroaches, you don’t need them, but they exist and multiply.
How are you being scammed by people posing as your local shop or business owners?
Firstly, they put their phone numbers on sites which show personal details of the business like location and contact details, etc.
They intrude fake entries and insert their phone numbers in the listing.
So, when you want to order something online, you just look up the phone number on the internet and call them right away.
They confirm your order, and ask you to pay in advance.
You might deny, saying that I’ll pay on delivery.
They will insist that you at least pay 50% in advance.
You pay 50% advance and wait for the order to arrive at your home.
You wait and wait and wait…
The order never arrives. You call them the phone number is now switched off.
You know you have been scammed.
You run to the business location to check on your order and are surprised to know that they never received your order.
You cross check the phone number and the business owner confirms that it is not his number.
If you are being scammed this way, what mistake did you do in first place?
You never verified if the phone number if legitimate. You blindly trusted the online source and paid the advance.
Nowadays it is very easy to infiltrate online sites and fill them up with fake numbers to scam you. You should not trust direct online sources.
What precautions should you take to avoid being a victim of such scam?
- Take the phone number of the owner from the owner himself instead of relying on online sources
- Order from trusted online platforms like Zomato, Uber Eats, etc.
- You may also directly order from the site of business owner if there is one.
If you find yourself in such situation, your first move must be running to nearest cyber police station and lodge a complaint. Give every detail you have. Explain them from where you got the number, how much you paid, by what means did you pay, etc.
Also, share the details in local social media groups and make people aware of the scam. Doing so, will make sure that no more people fall victim to the scam.
It is also recommended to inform the business owner of what is actually happening.
Maybe the business owner will take you lightly at first. Then show him a copy of police complaint you made, so he trusts you and cooperate.
