India was considered to be lacking with respect to the world in terms of exposure to mobile phones, computers and mobile devices per ca-pita. But now India is catching up pretty quickly in these areas with the rest of the world. India has seen a boom in the number of internet users and smartphone users in the past five years. There are various factors that affected this sudden growth of internet users in India. During this period cheap smartphones, cheap internet, etc. were introduced. These factors made it affordable for the common people of India to have access to the internet.
The boom of internet!
Here is a graph which clearly shows the increase in the number of internet users in India
As we can clearly see in the graph that the number of users went from 259.88 millions to 525.3 million. Within a span of just 5 years the user base was almost doubled. This was the boom of internet users in India, more and more people are exposed to the internet and are now using the internet on a daily basis.
This was a very good thing to happen as the internet is considered to be one of the important pillars to increase the pace of development of the nation. The number of growth of users in India is pictorially given below in the graph.
The rise of Online Scams
But as there are always two sides to a coin. As the internet is a very good tool for good uses it is also an easy way to scam people. As India saw the growth in the number of internet users in India it also witnessed the growth of internet scams and cyber crimes.
This graph clearly shows how the number of cyber crimes went up from 2015-2018.In 2015 – 11,592 unique cases were reported whereas in 2018 – 27,248 cases were reported. The cyber crime rate was more than double in 2018 than in 2015.
This table does a direct comparison between the number of users and the cases filed. We can easily notice that as the number of users went up, so did the number of crimes and scams happening on the internet also went up. The increased exposure of the internet also created the scenario of scams and crimes going up day by day.
The harsh reality!
It is not the case that there were no scams happening before the internet boom. But the scale at which the internet scams grew was also similar to the growth of internet users. People are getting scammed on a daily basis. The internet and smartphones are still a fairly new technology for many Indians. The scammers seem to take advantage of the situation.
The online scams are increasing day to day as the internet is reaching more and more people. More people on the internet are just new opportunities for these scammers. There is not just one way in which these scammers scam people. They keep on finding new ways to exploit people.
It is a harsh reality that if someone gets scammed online, the chances of recovering the money is very less. The Indian government is taking all the possible actions to help the people who are victims of such scams. The government services are not yet enough to reduce them or to do something that will stop them. As the number of cases are too high and the government services for online scams are too less.
So it is very important that the people using the internet must be very careful. They must take all precautions so that they don’t fall prey to such scams.
